Ola Fest 2011 - A weekend of Films, Art & Culture galore

This weekend I am excited to exhibit my artwork at the 2011 Ola Fest in Orlando, FL. Two of my pieces; both in the Cultural theme of the Day of the Dead; will be exhibited along with the artwork of an amazing line up of artists including Alberto Quintero, Pedro Brull, Nathalie Torres, Alfredo Ocasio, Maryse Jupillat, Nhora Suttinger, Nathalie Torres and many more at the Premiere Cinema Fashion Square Mall. The opening reception will take place on Thursday, February 10th at 6 pm in the Cinema and the closing will take place on Sunday, February 13 at the same location.

Ola Fest 2011 is the 7th Annual Orlando Latin American Film & Heritage Festival. This wonderful event will showcase Latin American independent Films by both legendary and emerging filmmakers, hands-on educational sessions, live drama presentations, poetry minga (communal work), performances by incredible musicians & dancers and as I mentioned previously, an art exhibition by local visual artists.

Support this great event taking place from Thursday, February 10th to Sunday, February 13th.

Featured Artist at Downtown Orlando Information Center’s “Spotlight Gallery”

In January I was invited to be the Featured Artist on behalf of CityArts Factory at the Downtown Orlando Information Center’s “Spotlight Gallery”. A series of my illustrations' limited edition prints including the “Flower Ant”, “Cuatrista en Calzones” and "Calacas Musicales" are on display for 3 months and available for purchase at $25 each through the Downtown Information Center.

The Spotlight Gallery is an initiative by the Downtown Orlando Information Center to encourage Downtown Visitors to experience and enjoy our thriving Arts community.

If you have never stopped in at the Downtown Information Center, you are in a for a nice experience. There are a great variety of Downtown Orlando resources to ensure a full experience of our Downtown including a neat 3-D model of downtown, an interactive kiosk and everyone’s favorite thing ever: Free Wi-Fi.

My Mural at SAK Comedy Lab

I recently painted a Mural in the stairwell entrance of SAK Comedy Lab located within CityArts Factory in Downtown Orlando.

SAK Comedy lab is legendary for its Hilarious improv shows, improv classes and its fresh and varied Line up of Comedians and funny folks.

When I was approached by CityArts to paint this Mural, I was happy to take on this great opportunity.

It was a fun and adventurous job since I had to place my ladder on a stairwell and at times had to perform unimaginable torso twists to reach some of the spots I had to paint. I completed the Mural in about 15 hours all together.

My Doodles on exhibit at CityArts Factory

I currently have 2 paintings and 2 illustrations in the "Art for Sale" exhibition at CityArts Factory in Orlando. This exhibition was organized with Holiday shopping in mind. All art is priced at $200 and under. Luckily for you, all my pieces are for sale under $100 in fact, the most pricey one is $75. Check out the fantastic array of Art that hangs at the Galleries within CityArts Factory. AND if you get a chance, check out my mural in the SAK Comedy Lab stairwell located in the CityArts building. (Yes, there is a SAK Improv club in Downtown Orlando and it's awesome!).

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Exhibition in Orlando, FL

The Tacatantån Group in Orlando, FL presents "Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)" an exhibition showing from Thursday, October 21, 2010 until Saturday, November 13, 2010 in the Orlando Magic Gallery as a part of the CityArts Factory's "Monster Factory" Exhibition.

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is not a mournful or scary commemoration but a happy and colorful celebration where death takes a lively, friendly expression. It's a time in which the living remember their departed relatives and offer goods, treats and celebrations to honor their lost loved ones.

Fabaic 2010 - A Bling Extravaganza!

Last year I attended the 2009 Face And Body Art International Convention for the first time and I loved every minute of it. The inspiration I developed then was Vivid and exciting!! Well, before I knew it, a whole year had passed and it was time for Fabaic 2010. The theme was "Bring on the Bling" and did we ever!
Every design that walked the Convention Center had it's respective Bling Factor. It might be safe to say that Glitter, Gems and Metallics were the big selling items at the Vendor Room. There were great products there! I stocked up on Wolfe FX Aquacolor Paints, Glitter, Sponges, new brushes and a couple of my favorite Paradise/Mehron Aquacolor paints as well.
For the first time, I signed up for the Face Painting competition in the Professional category, but there was an unfortunate series of events that day and long story short, I was late and was unable to participate. I learned from the experience and next year I'll be ready! I still painted the design I had planed on my model and it turned out great! ("Sugar Skull" pictured on the right. Model: Patricia Stever)

This was my second time attending and working at Fabaic. I did Camera work in a few classes. My job was to follow the instructors with the camera during class. I had a great view of all the workshops with zoom action and got to meet more of the operations crew, instructors & assistants. The entire Fabaic crew was wonderful to work with.
At Fabaic, the classes I attended were given by ultra talented instructors including Jinny, Marcela Murad, Katie Hunt, Lynne Jamieson, the Wolfe Brothers & Pashur. I learned something new from all of them and enjoyed their workshops tremendously.These instructors were on point and held very dynamic and engaging classes.

I cannot express enough how much of a positive impact Fabaic has had on me as an artist and on my face painting business.

I am very thankful to Marcela Murad and her team for the roads they've paved for all fellow generations of Face Painters and Body Artists. I am beyond sparkled to have been a part of this amazing gathering for a second time around.

I look forward to a year of putting to use my newfound skills and months of great anticipation for Fabaic 2011, when we'll be celebrating Fabaic's 10 year Anniversary!

Carolina The Doodler Face Painting celebrates 1 year in business!

One year ago, in January of 2009 I started my first business and called it 'Carolina The Doodler Face Painting'. It all began with an idea, some inspiration, lots of encouragement, a small 12 color palette of face paint and a tiny cup of glitter. Throughout my first year I was embraced by the Central Florida Community (and beyond) and am now entering my second year heading this solo endeavor as a Face Painter. I would like to thank all my wonderful patrons for all of their support, my fellow artists for all their help and encouragement and last but not least my amazing family for believing in me and seeing me through the hurdles along the way. Mandaddy: A Gargamel Beijing Opera Mask

Mandaddy, the fantastic front man from the outrageous Orlando band 'Gargamel', lent me his face for this Beijing Opera Mask Face Painting.

This project was a lot of fun, likely the most exciting face painting I've ever done. There is nothing like having that perfect face as a canvas. Mandaddy was a great model, he sat and did what he does best as he morphed into character and brought my work to life with the incredible elasticity of his face. No one could have done it better than him (thanks Don Manuel!)

To top off my luck, Media Guru Dave Segal from Bootleg TV donated his time and skills to record Video and take pictures of the entire process.
He put together a video that surpassed all my expectations (thanks Dave!) using clips from the shoot and a trippy tune from Abdias Garcia, 'Chimpun bread' (thanks Abdias!)

I can honestly say that I feel honored to have worked with all of them and I look forward to painting Mandaddy's rubber face again someday. (how about now?!)

Abdias E. Garcia - CD Release - El Experimento de la Vida

In January of this year, my husband Abdias decided that he was in the right season to finally record his first solo album which he properly named 'El Experimento de la Vida' (the experiment of life). Abdias has dedicated most of his lifetime to working as a musician.

I witnessed the coming to life of this album and I was humbled by the endless hours of work and the intense passion that Abdias shared of himself to achieve this.
Some of Abdias' good friends including Abel Avalos, Kevin Stever, Nate Marshall, Omar Daluca and Ito Colon began gathering in our home to rehearse the album for the CD Release.

Three nights a week for the past month I did all my end of the day chores along to the sweet music that they played as they rehearsed for hours at a time. These guys, including Abdias truly poured their hearts into getting every song just right.
With the music of El Experimento de la Vida I have felt the beat of the life we've lived for the past years embedded in each note.
Each song resonates the perfect pitch of the stories he tells and makes me feel the raw emotions that he intends to share.

The CD Release was wonderful. We saw many familiar faces and many new faces as well. Folks enjoyed dancing and a good time at Club 57 West in Downtown Orlando. It was such a treat to sit at the merch table and watch people embracing Abdias and his music and just listening to the album LIVE!

I thank Abdias for making this album, for it's handpicked goodness & for the many things he's shown in it that an artist can sometimes only share through his art.

Handbags for Hospice

This past June I participated in an event that sincerely warmed my heart. Wendy Davis invited me to paint a wooden purse and donate it to raise funds for Hospice of the Comforter. I looked up the Hospice to see what they were all about and I was very moved by their organization.

Wendy's connection to them occurred through the steps of her Uncle Henry's life. Henry endured living with Cancer through his final days and in that process of the human cycle Hospice was there donating all the services that provide comfort to the patient and support and bereavement services for their loved ones.
Sadly, Uncle Henry passed away this past January. Wendy and her mom visited his home to clean it out and take care of his belongings. unexpectedly, Wendy found herself amazed by the secret beauty of her Uncle's life. She found out in those days about all the good he did and she was inspired to begin her own journey in following his footsteps.
That's when Wendy founded "Uncle Henry's Closet" a Charity to raise funds for Organizations with a good cause such as Hospice of the Comforter who in their selflessness they hold the tender hearts of everyone that gets to know of them.
Over 40 local artists donated painted handbags for a silent auction event that took place at the City Arts Factory in June. The sale of the bags is ongoing online at www.helpedbyhandbags.org
and all the proceeds go to Organizations supported by Uncle Henry's Closet.
I'd like to thank Wendy for her involvement in the community and for the great example she's setting for us and generations to come.

A vivid fusion of multicolors at FABAIC 2009!

The Face and Body Art International Convention (FABAIC) took place here in Orlando, Florida on May 20-24 bringing together hundreds of Face and Body painting artists of all ages & skill levels at the Universal DoubleTree Hotel & Convention Center.

Sponsored by Silly Farm and produced by the admirable Marcela Murad (Mama Clown), FABAIC 2009 offered the extensive face painting community 5 days filled with cutting edge training by remarkable instructors like Jinny, Mark Reid, Nick and Brian Wolfe, Heather Banks, Lymari Millot and Ambah O'brien among many others. Notable vendors offered attractive deals on high quality products for face and body painting by Mehron, Wolfe FX, Kryolan, Glimmer Body Art and many more. (click here to view the full list of vendors)

This was my first year attending the convention which was the 8th FABAIC since it's conception in 2001. I had the honor of working with the Silly Farm team during the supply market place hours selling Fabaic merchandise to the artsy, eccentric, fantastic and silly attendees.

The event featured everything from live painting jams, trippy sights, competitions, marvelous giveaways, live entertainment, a night glow gala (yes, cool stuff happening left and right) and a whole bunch of networking which we all know is key to a well rounded career in the entertainment business.

I have worked in the arts for many years of my life, but never have I been immersed so deeply in such a brilliant melting pot of cruising art. Everyone was face or body painted and decorated thus creating an extreme case of collective visual stimulation.

I'd like to thank all the prismatic folks that made my well spent time at FABAIC 2009 one that I will embrace and apply each time I pick up a brush or sponge at my own face painting gigs. My most sincere gratitude goes to miss Claudia Banks for granting me the opportunity to attend this utmost unforgettable occasion.

So for now lets all get back to work and see you at FABAIC 2010. Until then, doodle on my friends, doodle on.

Pintura Project Graffiti Conference

Notorious Graff Artists from around the globe met up at the Pintura Project Graffiti Festival in Downtown Orlando on Saturday, April 25.

The day was filled with amazing Live Graffiti Art, Music by an excellent gamut of D.J.s, excellent moves by Bboys, fun Face & Body Painting, a wide array of art and merch Vendors, Food and Beverages.

This Face painter had a great time and I definitely hope to learn the art of Graffiti myself so I can have my own wall at next year's event. (hint-hint)

Face Painting at the Osceola Art Festival!

For the 42nd year, the Osceola Art Festival, presented by the Osceola Center for the Arts in partnership with Valencia Community College, took place on February 7th & 8th at the Valencia South Campus.

The festival, an annual national juried event. featured the works of over a hundred artists, live entertainment, face painting, children's activities, and plenty of delicious food.

Paintings, pastels, graphics, drawing, photography, sculpture, jewelry and more were showcased at the two-day event.

This was the festival's first year at it's new location and still the community came down wholeheartedly to support the arts.
I had a blast painting little (and big) faces turning the event goers into walking artworks.

Art Exhibit: RoHo Art House

This art exhibit featured a collection of my latest paintings and collaborations with my husband Abdias. We painted percussion instruments in very unique styles. The Third Thursday Art Opening event had Live Music by Crates Anatomy. The night was filled with art throughout the City Arts Factory and the most wonderful patrons. There was live painting, food and drinks and loads of visual stimulation.

This exhibit took place from January 15th - February 16th, 2009.

Roho Art & Coffee House is a new downtown venue located at 29 S. Orange Av. near the corner of Orange Av & Pine St.

Visit Maria and her friendly staff for a variety of Cuban and classic coffee selections,tropical drinks, teas,Cuban sandwiches and pastelitos all in a warm and inviting art gallery setting.

Art Exhibit: Another Round.

SMALL ART FOR A SMALL VENUE!

On Tuesday, January 13th I participated in "Another Round" at Wally's Mills Avenue Liquors. The whimsical one night show featured various local artists selling a variety of mixed media pieces no larger than 7"x 7". Wally's is one of the longest standing bars in Orlando, its cozy and tiny rooms were the perfect shelter for the tiny art of various local artists. I will definitely participate next time around as art sold like hot cakes and the drinks were flowing like water!
Thank you Liz Watkins for putting together such a fun and unique event.
